A beautifully presented Grade II
listed freehold Mayfair town house
Charles Street extends from Berkeley Square to Waverton Street.
It was on Lord Berkeley's estate and Charles was a name in
common use in the family - hence probably the street's name.
The house was built between 1753 and 1754. The first recorded inhabitant of No. 18 was a Jeremiah Tomkins, who was a wealthy draper and "purveyor of fine stuffs" to the nobility and gentry. Tomkins had a retail outlet on the nearby Haymarket at this time. Records show that in 1792 No. 18 was lived in by John Thomas Ellis who is simply described as a gentleman. Most succeeding occupants down to Victorian times can be described in similar terms; individuals famous only in terms of their families and servants' opinion of them, no more no less.
