Where is it?
Set just off Berkeley Square, with Hyde Park and Park Lane to the west and Green Park to the south, Mount Street is Mayfair’s answer to Chelsea’s King’s Road.

Why Go?
Mayfair’s shopping artery and one of London’s finest residential areas since the 18th century, Mount Street has long attracted some of the capital’s best retailers for fashion, art, antiques, food and wine. There are also specialist businesses such as Purdey and William & Son, the gun and rifles makers, and the Mount Street Printers. Today, you’ll also find edgier designer brands – such as Lanvin, Paule Ka and Louboutin – next to a traditional butcher, a stationer and various restaurants, including the legendary Scott’s.

What will I see?
Aside from the chauffeur-driven cars snaking up the street and the throngs of wealthy foreigners on their daily expenditure exercise, Mount Street still attracts old-school London. One of the capital’s finest hotels, The Connaught, anchors the area and as if this wasn’t enough luxe, there’s even a couple of exclusive members’ bars, George, and Harry’s Bar. The perfect village vibe is further enhanced by the delightful Mount Street Gardens, created in 1889 from the former burial ground of St George’s, Hanover Square.

The Backstory
The area takes its name from Mount Field, said to be a remnant of Civil War fortifications erected to protect London from the advances of the Royalist army.

1720s Mount Street is the longest single road owned by the Grosvenor Estate and was best known as the main thoroughfare from Central London to Tyburn, to watch public hangings.

1885 James Trant Smith is chosen as the architect to build a U-shaped development of shops, houses and chambers in the red brickwork style of the Arts & Crafts movement.

1900s Mount Street becomes a fashionable shopping district.

The home of the Dukes of Wellington, Apsley House at Hyde Park Corner is known as Number One London because it was the first house encountered after a ride through the fields of Knightsbridge. In fact its postal address is 149 Piccadilly. When the 7th Duke gave the house to the nation in 1947, the family retained the private rooms, which they still use today. Apsley House is the last great surviving London town house – and the only house managed by English Heritage in which the original owner's family is still alive. A banquet is held there on June 18 every year to celebrate Wellington's victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815.
